Isolation allows for self-improvement

Don't give up. You are not alone. You matter.
Nobody is perfect, self-improvement is a sign of maturity.

There’s no doubt, COVID-19 is a pandemic, real and deadly. Not just any ‘common’ flu, there are 1.7M+ confirmed cases globally and without a vaccination to date. Wash your hands frequently, don’t touch your face and follow safety precautions. Most importantly, stay indoors – unless if you’re a healthcare or essential worker (who are the true heroes), there should be no reason for irresponsible behaviour.

Let’s talk about the more interesting part: what effect does this have in my life? For the majority of us, we are slowly adapting to this isolation lifestyle (i.e. working from home, taking online courses, getting addicted to Tik-Tok or even worrying about looking like caveman). However, isolation allows for self-improvement and self-reflect on our current lives.

TL;DR:

  • Every person has equal contribution to society
  • Superiority complex is an unhealthy mindset
  • I hope COVID-19 will teach us to stop being judgemental and remove negativity on others
  • It only takes one person to change your life completely
  • Blame yourself, never on others
  • Isolation is the perfect time create opportunities for yourself

Your contribution matters

Forgive me if this is a bad blog post, this is my first one.

For the longest time ever, I thought blogs were time-consuming, work-heavy, low producing activities. Only 1% of bloggers are able to reach that level of ‘success’ (i.e. blogging funds their travels, affiliate marketing, become an influencer). Of course, those are rewards gained not overnight, but overtime. But that should not be a reason for starting a blog, it won’t hold up in difficult times.

Being passionate in what you’re doing is key.

Once you publish your blog post, it’s on there forever (that is, unless if you remove it). It’s okay if you don’t make money from your blog, positive thoughts and good intentions will always be welcome.

Defining success

But really though, think of what does success mean to you? At least for me, I have always wanted to become a blogger, but procrastination always took the toll with excuses I gave for myself. It was not until a few days ago, I was scrolling through my LinkedIn feed and came across this underrated post from Brigette Hyacinth who truly inspired me to create my own blog website and impact more lives in the world.

I strongly recommend everyone taking a quick read (she really deserves a gold medal) before continuing:

I hope everyone can take this time during the COVID-19 pandemic to realize how our judgemental thoughts, ignorance, and superiority complex affects our daily lives. As mentioned, grocery store workers, bus drivers, delivery drivers, fast food workers, garbage collectors, sanitation workers, etc. are the essential workers who are the real heroes in assisting our needs during this rough time.

Every person has equal contribution to society, having to justify your self-worth is a form of insecurity and immaturity. Self-improvement is a sign of maturity, being able to spot your weaknesses and be open to change.

Being negative and judgemental has its limitations

I’ll try to keep this short but let me relate this to my own personal experience to illustrate pre-judgements and assumptions can limit future opportunities that rise.

For new visitors on my website, just to add some context; I was a former Computer Science student at the University of Waterloo (about me here). A Canadian-based university renowned for its education quality in mathematics, computer science and engineering with our infamous co-operative program.

Throughout my university life, I would consider myself having a very judgemental, ignorant and superiority complex on others due to an offer of admission into such a competitive program. Even when I was in the corporate life, when I attended networking events – I’ve always approached well-dressed and presentable people. Just hang in there, I will tell you how this iteration habit was setting myself up for failure.

Meeting the “homeless” guy

Early April 2019 marks a turning point in my life.

I was plotting an escape out of the corporate scene; it wasn’t for me (blog post coming soon!). One day, after a long day at work on a Thursday night, I was bored. So, I decided to attend a social mixer for entrepreneurs and professionals, an event I came across on Eventbrite. Initially, just from hearing the title – I imagined it to be full of a bunch of MLM scams and network marketers, but I still decided to give it a chance.

Networking events can come in many different types, not to mention being time consuming and tiring. A key tactic that has been working for myself is to give everyone in the room at least 30-60 seconds to introduce themselves (wasn’t until this night I ate my words up).

What’s a success in a networking event to me? Quality > Quantity. If I could meet one person who can positively impact my life, that’s already a big W.

Upon arrival at the event, I was surprised, the turnout for amazing! As I was circling around the room, I noticed this guy who looked like caveman with an unshaven beard drinking alcohol in the corner. To be honest, I thought to myself, “how did this homeless guy finesse his way through the bouncers?”.

During the night, when I was talking to a group of lawyers, I overheard a woman speaking about SEO and e-commerce which sparked my interest. As a result, I approached the woman and waited until she finished her current conversation. I was excited, but upon talking to her, I find out she was just trying to step foot into the marketing space. Frustrated, I quickly finish the conversation and turn to the closest person so I could vent. And this person was the “homeless” guy.

F*ck it. I decided to give him a chance.

And believe me, his first 10 second introduction was mind-blowing.

A 39-year-old, multi-millionaire. He was the Founder and President of a high tech manufacturing company that specializes in building customized elevators for private residences. Most of his clients were either millionaires or billionaires.

For privacy purposes, I won’t be disclosing his identity.

Surprisingly, our personalities clicked. From the time we started talking, he was like cocaine. Highly addictive. I kid you not.

And the rest is history. Fast forward, soon later he became one of my closest friends and mentors.

As the old idiom phrase goes, “don’t judge a book, by its cover”. What if I didn’t give the “homeless” guy a chance? This made me realize by removing negativity and perceptions on others, it opens many paths and options for ourselves.

It only takes one person to change your life completely.

Who is it to blame?

Nobody, but yourself. One could argue that our friends, family and the environment we are raised in influences our behaviours and belief systems. But, that’s untrue, it’s our choices in life. In addition, blaming never solves anything, only continuous self-improvement cycle is the healthy mindset.

Friends

You have a choice. The friends we surround ourselves is by choice. Friends have a huge impact on our lives, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. These people influence our behaviour, attitudes and results.

Family

You don’t have a choice. However, we must learn to appreciate them and understand on their behalf. We are humans not robots, we make mistakes. We have the choice to feel, think and act.

Environment

Eh, it depends. If you asked me a year ago, I would’ve blamed my university for indirectly training my superiority complex behaviour through the competitive school environment I was put through.

But that’s not a valid reason. Environment is what you create, you have the ability to change who you surround yourself with.

Be an opportunist*

*Disclaimer: Before making a controversial statement, if you are currently employed, in poverty, a sole individual supporting a family or any related extraneous factors, then this isolation (snowballing into a recession) is terrible. This won’t be applicable for you.

As I develop this blog further, I hope to write for millennials who have difficulty choosing between their job offers, people running their own companies, people who are confused with the path they’re heading or in the process of making a career change.

For myself at least. I see this isolation as an opportunity for personal growth.

We are humans, not magicians and witches. Life is unpredictable, 3 months ago I was in the process of closing multiple client deals with hair salons, realtors and car dealerships. But with this devastating COVID-19 situation, I was forced to rip away the contract.

Pandemics are no joke; it affects everyone. But it’s this unanticipated event occurrence that forces me to become more creative. And think outside the box, which other industries are booming during this time?

Besides myself, I see this an opportunity for others. If you’re an active student, experienced a cancellation in your incoming internship, in the process of finding an internship or new grad, you might need to reconsider. Certainly, a rough time for everyone, use this excess amount of time to develop your current skills. Start checking your to-dos off your list, instead of adding more.

Conclusion

This was a super long first post, (virtual hug) if you made it this far. Thanks for reading!

  9. Kelvin, very insightful for a “millenial”.
On fact you touched on several aspects of this adapting , transforming world. I am intrigued as I am a proponent of the disinigration of the current model and the redesign and transformed model that the millenials are creating the framework for.
Perhaps our paths will cross. Keep blogging from your insights and perspective.!!

I basically think that after Covid-19 pandemic, humans would have learned to be more caring and thoughtful. Many people will continue living a healthy lifestyle (Hand washing, masking, sanitizing, use of Immune boosters etc) . Flu and Food poisoning due to unhealthy habits such as not washing hands and using face masks will reduce. The health sector will gain more attention in national budgeting especially in developing countries. Hunger will reduce to a greater percentage. Some countries might go bankrupt if not careful. They will seek help in order to recover. People can worship anywhere without necessarily going to a gathering. Unemployment will increase but there would be many vacancies available especially in Health care, Agric, Education, grocery stores, Energy sector and the ICT sector. The world will never forget COVID-19.
Truth is, we cannot do without one another. We must coexist in peace. And this peace is not negotiable.
